Fall in Ste. Genevieve
Leaves have started to color brilliantly, and the black walnuts already litter the garden. With the cooler nights and dry sunny days, it is a wonderful time to spend a few days in Ste. Genevieve. The Annual Country Christmas Walk is just around the corner with lots of activities in town. Festivities officially begin on Saturday morning, December 4, with the town's tiny holiday parade and continue through Sunday's combined choral concert in the Ste. Genevieve Church. See Calendar of Events for further activities Charleville Vineyard has a tasting room on North Main Street, immediately next door to the Inn. In town, Sainte Genevieve Winery will be offers visitors a sheltered spot to enjoy both wine and music on Merchant Street. A wine garden, also with live music on the weekends, has opened behind the historic Jean Baptiste Valley House at Main and Market. Offered are wines from all our local wineries for enjoyment on site or to take home. A welcome newcomer on the dining scene is The Restaurant Inn St. Gemme Beauvais on North Main Street. While only open for dinner on Friday and Saturday nights, the restaurant has already developed a loyal following. Menus change weekly and reflect our town's French heritage. | Spiced Pumpkin Souffle Pancakes 1 1/4 cups all purpose flour 3 tablespoons sugar 2 teaspoons baking powder 1 1/4 teaspoons pumpkin pie spice 3/4 teaspoon salt 1 1/3 cups milk 1 cup canned pumpkin puree 4 large eggs, separated 1/4 cup oil 1 teaspoon vanilla extract Whisk dry ingredients together in a large bowl. In another bowl, whisk milk, pumpkin, egg yolks, oil, and vanilla. Add to dry mixture, whisking until smooth. Mixture will be stiff. Beat egg whites until stiff, but not dry. Fold into pumpkin batter in two additions. Brush skiller or griddle with cooking oil. When hot, bake on griddle turning when bubbles appear on the surface. Keep pancakes hot on a cookie sheet in a 250 degree oven until all are cooked. Serve with maple syrup and sauteed apples. Makes 26-28 three inch pancakes. Recipe adapted from Bon Appetit. |
